Kansas State picked up what will likely be the biggest win of the regular season for the Wildcats in terms of resume. And it will certainly be the biggest regular season win because of who it came against: Kansas.

In overtime at home, the Wildcats led by one as the Jayhawks held the ball to take a final shot. Then Jawhawks point guard Dajuan Harris coughed it up, Kansas State came up with it, and time ran out on Kansas.

The final result was an 83-82 win in overtime and a purple-clad court storming in Manhattan, Kansas.

The play that gave Kansas State the final lead was a bold call from head coach Jerome Tang out of a timeout: A lob to forward Keyontae Johnson, who finished with 24 points.

And back to the resume point, briefly: Kansas State entered the game ranked No. 13 in the AP poll and 15-2 overall. They were 4-1 in the Big 12. They don’t exactly need wins to get off the bubble, but wins like this can propel the Wildcats up a seed line come selection Sunday. And enough finishing near the top of the Big 12 is a surefire way to lockdown a strong seed for the NCAA Tournament.

Kansas entered No. 2 in the nation with a 16-1 record and a perfect 5-0 mark in-conference. Now the Wildcats are tied for first place with their rival Jayhawks — and hold the tiebreaker, for now.

These two teams will meet again in Lawrence at Phog Allen Fieldhouse on January 31.

Kansas State carried a 44-39 lead over Kansas into halftime on Tuesday night in a game that looks poised to go down to the final stages. After building up a double-digit lead, Kansas State saw the Jayhawks climb back in to the contest.

Speaking with ESPN sideline reporter Kris Budden before addressing his team at halftime, Wildcats head coach Jerome Tang said it’ll take another 20 minutes of good basketball to vanquish the No. 2 team in the country. He’s confident that his squad — ranked No. 13 — can do it.

“Poise. It’s a jab game. No knockout punches, just gotta keep throwing jabs,” Tang said.
