Oakland guard Jack Gohlke was one of the stars of the first round of the NCAA Tournament, scoring 32 points in an upset of Kentucky, while knocking down 10 3-pointers.

The performance was fun to watch for fans who love upsets, but it was tough to be a part of for the Wildcats.

Kentucky did everything it could to slow down Jack Gohlke, including guarding him with a box-and-one at times during the game. However, nothing seemed to work. After the game, Wildcats star Antonio Reeves described the feeling of watching Gohlke knock down shots.

“Yeah, he’s a good shooter. He kept shooting the ball,” Antonio Reeves said. “You know, he missed a couple, but he made a lot of them, and he made some really tough shots down the stretch.”

Jack Gohlke entered the game with 15:55 remaining in the first half and immediately started getting shots up. He was 7-for-13 from 3-point range in the first half to keep the Grizzlies in the game and 3-for-7 from 3-point range in the second half to help keep Oakland ahead.

Reeves felt like Kentucky did a solid job defensively on Gohlke, but he just continued to make hard shots.

“You know, we was in his face,” Reeves said. “And it was kind of, you know, one of those things where, you know, it’s March… and they’re going to hit some tough shots at the end and we just gotta keep playing.”

John Calipari on NCAA Tournament loss to Oakland: ‘This one is painful’

Kentucky has been upset in the NCAA Tournament several times recently as the Wildcats have not reached the Sweet 16 since 2019.

All of the losses have been tough, but the loss to Oakland was particularly painful for head coach John Calipari.

“I told them after, this one is painful,” Calipari told TNT’s Evan Washburn. “And the reason is there are other times you lose a game and you know your team is what it is. But this team, I really felt, was built for this moment. Even though we were young, I knew that could catch us. But we had our chances. We threw the ball away, took a bad shot. There were things that happened, and then we give up a corner three the last play.

“But you’ve got to give Oakland credit. They made unbelievable shots at the buzzer. They deserved to win the game. I hate to say we didn’t, but we didn’t.”
