Kentucky’s offense is a big talking point considering they’re on their fifth offensive coordinator of the last five years. Now, the player who will be running it for the first time, QB Brock Vandagriff, has given his thoughts on the system of the man who will now be calling it in OC Bush Hamdan.

Vandagriff explained his early impressions working within Hamdan’s playbook with reporters during the Wildcats’ media day last week. He thinks it’s very thorough considering how many variations can come out of a single call and how that can challenge a defense.

“I don’t know if I would say simple is the best word. But it’s definitely, like – it’s just efficient is what comes to my mind when I think of Coach Hamdan’s offense,” said Vandagriff. “It’s basically, like – so the first install? We basically had a couple of runs in but there’s like 10 pages for those couple of runs because there’s 40 different ways to run them. So making sure that we’re fine tuning – ‘Hey, this guy comes in motion? You still have this job to do.'”

“It’s basically just dressing up a lot of stuff. We’re running the same play but it looks like 40 different things,” Vandagriff continued. “That comes in with our run game, comes in with our pass game.”

It hasn’t been a challenge for Vandagriff to pick up, though, with it being his fourth college offense so far. He learned from two coordinators while at Georgia in Todd Monken and Mike Bobo before originally committing to play for Liam Coen.

However, at some point, it’s all the same to Vandagriff after learning his first collegiate system

“Basically, I think the biggest jump which comes to mind is high school to college. A high school playbook is a high school playbook. Like, we’re basically just at freaking recess drawing stuff up in the dirt out there. College is definitely a lot bigger playbook,” said Vandagriff. “Going into Coach Monken’s system? That’s obviously an NFL system. That was just like trying to drink from a fire hose as a freshman coming in there in January.”

“Basically, once you learn your first playbook, collegiate playbook? Everything else is not going to be too crazy different,” Vandagriff said. “In football, everybody runs duo, everybody runs inside zone. They’re going to call it different stuff, break down defenses different. But, as long as you learn Coach Hamdan’s verbiage, then you’re on the same page.”

Kentucky would prefer to be using this offense for the foreseeable future if for no other reason than avoiding a sixth straight change in system. That leaves it to Hamdan and Vandagriff to set it and run it well over the course of their first season together in Lexington.

I’ve really enjoyed Coach Hamdan’s offense so far and looking forward to obviously more in the fall,” said Vandagriff.
