Some quarterbacks might not appreciate a late addition of another notable one following spring practice. However, that isn’t the case at Kentucky with how Brock Vandagriff appreciates what Gavin Wimsatt has brought since coming in at the start of May.

Vandagriff spoke about Wimsatt and his effect on their position during the Wildcats’ media day last week. He said that he has been a welcome addition so far as all of the quarterbacks have been learning from each other, including him, over their offseason together.

“Gavin is awesome. He’s another great dude to have in the quarterback room,” said Vandagriff. “He takes his reps serious when he’s in there.”

“We’re all learning from each other. He was a great addition for the quarterback room,” said Vandagriff. “Me, Beau, and Cutter really appreciated him and the stuff he has done for us.”

Wimsatt, originally a native of Owensboro, Kentucky that’s less than 200 miles west of Lexington, was a former four-star recruit from the state in 2021. He was a Top-25 QB in the class and the No. 3 player from out of the bluegrass. However, none of the national interest or even the in-state programs, including Kentucky, were able to earn his commitment with him starting his collegiate career at Rutgers.

Over three seasons with the Scarlet Knights, Wimsatt appeared in 25 games. That includes 21 outings in the past two seasons with 19 starts. In his career in Piscataway, he went 212-455 (46.6%) when passing for 2,537 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions. He also rushed for 628 yards and 11 more scores.

Wimsatt was the full-time starter and a team captain for Rutgers in 2023 as a junior. During those 13 games, he went 138-289 (47.8%) for 1,735 yards, nine touchdowns, and eight picks while also running for all of his scores with 497 yards. That gave him one of the best overall yardage and total touchdown seasons in the Big Ten and school history.

However, following the spring in New Jersey, Wimsatt entered his name into the transfer portal during the spring cycle. From there, he took a visit to Kentucky within the week and then committed to the Wildcats soon after.

With his transfer, Kentucky added three quarterbacks in the portal this offseason. Vandagriff, who arrives from Georgia, is clearly the most notable. He’s the incoming starter as the No. 35 transfer and No. 8 QB in On3’s 2024 Transfer Portal Top Players. Allen also returns to the state and to the program after a season apiece at Tarleton State and Georgia Southern. In those same rankings, he’s the No. 63 QB and No. 943 transfer. As for Wimsatt, he comes in as the No. 91 QB and at No. 1,283 overall.

Still, while Wimsatt won’t be the starter for UK, he does provide a unique weapon for the Wildcat offense. Even as a backup, there’s opportunities for him to help them in the run game based on certain packages for him.

All four Kentucky quarterback are going through this process together in joining the program. That’s why they have no issue with adding a veteran who’s coming home in Wimsatt with what he can also bring to their team.
