Five-Star Plus+ PG Boogie Fland visits Kentucky
Fresh off a tumultuous summer in Lexington, John Calipari and Kentucky managed to put together a daunting roster for the upcoming 2023-24 roster. With sights set on finally making it back to the top of the mountain, the Wildcats are also looking to continue making their mark on the recruiting trail.
With one commitment in the 2024 cycle — Overtime Elite four-star center Somto Cyril — already in the bag, the Cats are locked in on many of the top-ranked players in the nation, one of whom is Harlem (N.Y.) Archbishop Stepinac Five-Star Plus+ point guard Johnuel “Boogie” Fland.
The No. 9 overall prospect and No. 1 point guard in the 2024 cycle — per the On3 Industry Ranking — was in Lexington over the weekend for an official visit. UK joins North Carolina, Michigan and Indiana as programs to receive an OV from the 6-foot-3, 175-pounder.
Fland announced a top eight schools of Kentucky, Alabama, Michigan, Maryland, North Carolina, Indiana, UConn and St. John’s back in July. He’s expected to take OVs to the Crimson Tide and the Terrapins in October, leaving the Huskies and Red Storm as the two teams yet to get him on campus for an official.
The timeline for a commitment remains unclear, but the Wildcats rolled out the red carpet over the weekend and are doing everything they can to make Fland the next high-profile point guard to come to the Bluegrass.

“Anytime John Calipari gets a player on campus, it’s noteworthy, especially when it is a point guard,” On3’s Jamie Shaw wrote. “Calipari has had a long track record with top point guards, and Boogie Fland is the No. 1 ranked point guard in the 2024 class. Things are quiet around Fland’s recruitment, but Kentucky is one of the two or three programs carrying some buzz.
“Coach Cal has been saying he really wants me at the school,” Fland told KSR+ in July. “All the coaches were coming to my games. They’re a winning program. I saw them play that little exhibition tournament they had in Toronto (GLOBL JAM). Just the play style.”
Fland has an On3 NIL Valuation of $434K. The On3 NIL Valuation is the industry’s leading index that sets high school and college athletes’ projected annual value (PAV). The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
Boogie Fland Scouting Summary
“Boogie Fland plays with a New York flair. He has a good handle and is able to shoot the ball from each level. He has deep range off the bounce and will pull up if you give him an inch. He sees the floor well, gets his teammates in evolved, and takes care of the ball, valuing possessions. There is a floater game in there as well, with a one and two dribble pull-up. He will need to continue getting stronger, and he is a solid athlete and has average length. The confidence is sky-high, and the skill set is obvious. He has a comfort playing on the ball or off the ball in a two-guard lineup. Never afraid of the spotlight. Charismatic. He missed a lot of his sophomore season with injury.”
