The saga with Kentucky star Antonio Reeves continues, with the Wildcats unsure of the senior guard’s plans for the 2023-24 season.

The latest twist?

Reeves is enrolled in summer classes at Illinois State, his previous school, according to a report from Stadium’s Jeff Goodman. Goodman also notes that there are still “some moving parts with this one.”

KSR’s Matt Jones reports Reeves could be working toward finishing his degree, which would allow him to transfer and play elsewhere as a graduate transfer. Reeves recently withdrew his name from the 2023 NBA Draft pool, but he did not enter the transfer portal within the NCAA’s designated window, meaning he’d need a waiver to play immediately elsewhere — unless he becomes a graduate transfer.

“He can’t be a grad transfer, but if he finishes a summer of credits he can and he’s taking them — again, according to some reports — at Illinois State,” Jones said. “If he’s taking them at Illinois State, it’s because he doesn’t want to be here. Right? Why wouldn’t you take it here?”

Kentucky has had a tumultuous offseason, one that has seen several key departures.

Big man Oscar Tshiebwe entered the 2023 NBA Draft and opted not to withdraw before the NCAA deadline to retain eligibility, so he’s gone. So too is guard Chris Livingston, who also entered and remained in the 2023 NBA Draft.

The vast majority of Kentucky’s production — including that, potentially, of Reeves — is gone.

Jones had a dim outlook on how the offseason has gone for the Wildcats.

“I want you to think about the fact that we have no one that played a lot returning,” Jones said. “We have whiffed on multiple grad transfers. And you can’t say there’s a plan when they’ve brought guys on campus and gone after them and they’ve all gone somewhere else. Was the plan to lose guys on purpose? It has been in disarray.”

So will Kentucky be able to retain Reeves? That seems to be anyone’s guess at this point.

But if Goodman’s reporting is accurate, and there’s certainly no reason to doubt it, Antonio Reeves is now enrolled taking classes elsewhere.

The senior guard averaged 14.4 points and 2.1 rebounds for Kentucky last season, finishing as the team’s second-leading scorer. He transferred to play for the Wildcats after spending the previous three seasons with the Illinois State Redbirds.
