If the season ended today, Kentucky would not be an NCAA Tournament team.

Kentucky continues to limp toward the season’s finish line and with six games left before the SEC Tournament, it seems the Wildcats are running out of time to turn their fortunes around. Head coach John Calipari was a bit more optimistic after losing to Georgia on Saturday, though.

“Here’s what’s great — we’ve got the kind of schedule that, let’s go win games, and we’ll be fine. You’re going to have to win games,” Calipari said postgame. “They’re games that we’re playing against teams that, if you beat those teams, you’re fine. And whether we’re healthy or not, we’re going to have to go at those teams. And those are going to be important games for us. But we have them, it’s not like we don’t have any other chances to go get this right, and we do.”

Guards Sahvir Wheeler and CJ Fredrick missed the game due to injury, but still isn’t an excuse to lose a must-win game to a lower-ranked opponent. After all, Kentucky had the lead in the second half but a poor performance across the board ruined UK’s chances at defeating the Bulldogs despite the situation.

If Kentucky misses out on March Madness this year, the Wildcats would have missed the tournament in two of the past three years. The one time they did make it saw them lose to 15-seeded Saint Peter’s in the first round last year.

It raises serious questions about Calipari’s future in Lexington. At what point does Kentucky realize the Calipari era has grown stagnant and has fallen behind the times? It doesn’t seem like there’s any hurry to move on from him, so something is going to have to change within the program.

Kentucky has lost its title as the NCAA’s winningest program, hasn’t made a Final Four since 2015, hasn’t won a tournament game since 2018 and is currently slated to miss the postseason — again.

The sky might not be falling just yet, but it’s damn close.
