John Calipari's daughter responds to rumors that Kentucky coach didn't attend NBA Draft
John Calipari knows a thing or two about sending his players to the NBA Draft every season, which means it’s his job to attend each years event to send his Kentucky players off to become millionaires and All Stars.
The 2022 NBA Draft is no different. Kentucky’s Shaedon Sharpe (already drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers) and TyTy Washington (projected for lottery-mid first round) were both projected first rounders heading into Thursday, so why wouldn’t he attend if he could?
If rumors were to be believed, Calipari stayed home in Lexington as his 2022-2023 Wildcats squad has been getting their feet wet at the Joe Craft Center over the past week. Calipari’s daughter, Dr. Erin Calipari, cleared up those rumors for those still wondering where Calipari was Thursday.
“[John Calipari is] literally sending me selfies from the draft while the talking heads on here discuss why he isn’t there. You guys really need to watch where you get your news from,” Erin Calipari wrote.
While Sharpe is already off the board, Washington has yet to hear his name called, though is expected to be drafted anywhere from the end of the lottery through the 20th pick in most experts’ NBA mock drafts.

2022 NBA Draft: Portland Trail Blazers select Shaedon Sharpe, Kentucky guard
Kentucky guard Shaedon Sharpe is off the board in the 2022 NBA Draft. With the No. 7 pick of the first round, Sharpe was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers.
Sharpe is of Canadian decent but came to the United States to play basketball. Coming out of Dream City Christian in Arizona, he was the No. 1 player in the 2022 class before reclassifying to 2021. Sharpe then committed to the University of Kentucky and enrolled during this season’s spring semester.
That’s where things become clouded with the former five-star. At first, his intention was to return to Lexington for the ’22-’23 season. As things progressed, though, it became more and more likely he would leave for this season’s NBA Draft. That became official following his workouts leading up to and during the NBA Draft Combine.
Sharpe is the biggest question mark in this year’s draft. Although he’s seen as one of the best prospects in the pool, the lack of experience post-high school made his evaluations much more difficult. Now, it’s up to the Trailblazers to see what kind of player he can become.
