John Calipari took time to visit with people impacted by the recent flooding in Eastern Kentucky, and shared one special moment online. The Kentucky basketball coach has been a vocal advocate for providing assistance to those affected by the tragic flooding, and visited with the area recently to provide face-to-face support.

The recent floods in Eastern Kentucky took the lives of 37 people in the area. They left countless other survivors with nothing when it comes to the necessities of shelter or electricity. The aftermath may take the region years to officially come back from.

Calipari is one of many leaders in the state who is using his influence to help support those affected by the disaster, and shared a picture of his visit with some diehard Kentucky supporters who managed to save their memorabilia as the floods took everything else.

“We got to spend some time today with Edgar and Coleen Sandlin,” said Calipari about the photo. “Wonderful people. They lost everything in the floods but saved their UK memorabilia!”

Immediately following the flooding, Kentucky opted to turn an open practice session into a telethon to support the region as it dealt with the tremendous loss. Their telethon efforts raised over $3.3 million in donations for the victims of the flooding. The quick response and caring message of Kentucky’s basketball team set a standard for support that was praised widely.

Calipari didn’t rest after the successful telethon however, appearing publicly on the TODAY Show to highlight the need for support and further awareness of the tragedy.

The Kentucky basketball team also partnered previously with an organization called Samaritan’s Feet that helped provide shoes and clean feet for children across the Bahamas. After the seeing how the organization impacted the kids across the Bahamas, head coach John Calipari announced that his team will be sending 10,000 pairs of adult and children shoes to flood victims across eastern Kentucky.

The UK basketball team made the same gesture to the victims of the western Kentucky tornados back in December 2021. Now, historic flooding has put people in a similar position and the most profitable sports entity in the state is coming to try and alleviate some of the struggles.
