You may know UK athletics for a lot of things. The first thing that probably comes to mind is their eight-time national champion basketball program. You may know them recently for Mark Stoops’ job for the Wildcats on the gridiron. It could even be for recent championships in volleyball or rifle. Even so, one UK program and, this year specifically, one Wildcat athlete has blown multiple records out of the water. That program would be Kentucky track & field and that athlete would be Abby Steiner.

Steiner rewrote the record books during her senior season in Lexington. She was then selected to compete for Team USA during the 2022 World Athletics Championships. Steiner added yet another pair of awards to the trophy case after her performance in Eugene.

Her most recent win came during the 4×400 meter relay with Team USA. Steiner, alongside former Wildcat Sydney McLaughlin, helped run the relay in 3:17.19. She ran the second leg in 49.99. It was her second gold medal of the event as she also won in the 4×100 meter relay earlier this week.

Steiner won four NCAA titles in her four years at Kentucky. She has made a name for herself in the 200 meter as she holds the records in the event for USA, collegiate, SEC and school record books.

You may know Kentucky for a lot of different things but Abby Steiner is making her name unmistakable. She and McLaughlin have put their names, their program, and their university on the map in these competitions. With 57 races under her belt since the start of the season in December, Steiner didn’t commit to any more events following her win in the 4×400. Even so, you can bet that, at 22, this is just the start of a long, successful career for the Dublin, Ohio native.
