Kentucky transfer quarterback Gavin Wimsatt commits to Jacksonville State

Kentucky transfer quarterback Gavin Wimsatt committed to Jacksonville State on Sunday, according to his Instagram page. The former Wildcats quarterback committed to the Gamecocks, making it the third school of his career. The Gamecocks were C-USA Champions last year, completing a 9-5 overall season with a 30-27 loss against Ohio in the Cure Bowl.

Wimsatt began his career at Rutgers before transferring to play for his home state school for one season. He played there for three seasons and compiled 2,537 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, 17 interceptions, a 47.8% completion percentage, 628 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns.

At Kentucky, he was used mainly in run packages and for most of the season, the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart behind Brock Vandagriff. His best game came in Week 14 vs. Louisville, where he completed 4 of 9 passes for 125 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He had 183 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground this season as well.

Wimsatt is now one of the latest Wildcats to hit the transfer portal this offseason. Head coach Mark Stoops will have to reach deep in the transfer portal this offseason now having a depleted offensive unit after a disappointing 4-8 season.

Wimsatt is a former four-star recruit in the 2021 recruiting class, according to the On3 Industry Rankings, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services. He was the No. 220 player in his class and No. 24 QB.

The record kept Kentucky out of being bowl eligible for the first time in eight seasons, snapping a record-breaking streak under the longtime head coach. 2025 looks to be a pivotal year for the Stoops regime in Lexington.

The portal officially opened on Monday, Dec. 9, 2024. More than 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered their names into the NCAA’s transfer database during the 2023-24 school year. Removing those who withdrew or went pro, the final total sat at 2,707 transfers.

That means roughly 25 percent of all FBS scholarship players hit free agency in one year, per On3’s Pete Nakos.
