Like the rest of the country, Dick Vitale was in complete shock after watching Saint Peter’s take down two-seed Kentucky on Thursday. The ESPN analyst took to Twitter to congratulate the Peacocks on the biggest upset of the NCAA Tournament thus far.

“To me Saint Peter’s beating Kentucky is one of the biggest upsets ever in March Madness,” Dick Vitale wrote. “This is a total shocker. Tip the hat to MAAC Sports and Saint Peter’s as this is really March Madness! Talk about a real Cinderella!”

Kentucky wasn’t able to break free from Saint Peter’s grasp in the first half and headed into halftime tied at 37. The back-and-forth game between the Wildcats and Peacocks continued in the second half, with the teams ending regulation tied at 71. Kentucky scored the first two baskets of the overtime period, but Saint Peter’s continued to claw away. The Peacocks finally took the lead with 1:45 to play after a pair of free throws from Hassan Drame and never relinquished it the rest of the way.

Saint Peter’s become only the ninth 15 seed in the history of the NCAA Tournament to ever reach the second round. No 15 seed has ever advanced past the Sweet Sixteen after Florida Gulf Coast did so in 2013. The Peacocks now set up for a second round matchup against the winner of a 7-10 game between Murray State and San Francisco.

It was a disappointing end to the season for the Wildcats, whom many believed had potential to win the national championship entering this game. It has now been three seasons since Kentucky has won an NCAA Tournament game after missing the tournament entirely last season.

There is plenty of blame to go around following the loss, but none of it should be directed toward Oscar Tshiebwe. The Kentucky center and semifinalist for the Naismith Player of the Year award finished with 30 points and 16 rebounds in the loss. No other Wildcats player scored more than 11 as they shot 42.6% from the floor and 26.7% from 3-point range.

The Peacocks will next be in action Saturday against either San Francisco or Murray State.
