Yesterday, CBS’ newsly hired college basketball analyst Rex Chapman made one of the biggest on-air blunders in NCAA Tournament history. When discussing former Providence head coach Pete Gillen, Chapman forgot that Gillen, who currently works for CBS sports is alive and well.

Chapman talked about Gillen at Providence and then said, “Rest In Peace, Pete Gillen.” Watch the video below in case you didn’t get to see it. Needless to say, the internet will not let Rex forget this one.

As mentioned above, Pete Gillen is alive and well. He still works as a college basketball analyst for CBS Sports. So naturally, after Chapman’s epic blunder, he’s got some people trolling him on the internet today. One person who decided to troll Chapman, was Barry D. Hinson, who currently works as an analyst on the Oklahoma State men’s basketball coaching staff.

Check out the photo he posted.

Plenty of people have ripped Chapman over the past few days, as he’s quite the controversial figure. He’s not going to earn any points from college basketball fans for making a mistake that big. Mistakes on-air will undoubtedly happen with the coverage of so many teams, coaches, etc.

The good news is Pete Gillen seems to be having a laugh and having fun with the mistake.

Pete Gillen’s coaching career

Pete Gillen had three major head coaching stints across the college basketball landscape, Xavier (1985-1994), Providence (1994-1998), and Virginia (1998-2005). One of the teams Chapman was discussing when mentioning Gillen was when he had God Shammgod, a player with one of the more iconic names in college basketball history. As a sophomore, Shammgod guided Providence to the Elite Eight, where they lost to eventual national champion Arizona in overtime. In the loss, Shammgod poured in 23 points and dished out five assists.

The Elite Eight run for the 1996-1997 Providence team was the best of Gillen’s head coaching career. His best overall win percentage at the three schools came at Xavier, where he went 202-75 (.729). As the head coach of the Virginia Cavaliers, Gillen finished with an overall record of 118-93 (.559). With Virginia, he had four NIT appearances, all of which were early exits. Gillen had one NCAA Tournament appearance with the Cavaliers–the 2001 NCAA Tournament when Virginia was bounced by Gonzaga in the first round, 86-85.
