The National Player of the Year is coming back to school in college basketball, with Oscar Tshiebwe looking to once against dominate with Kentucky. He could have left the program in favor of starting his professional career but decided to return to Lexington to continue to play for head coach John Calipari.

While the Wildcats continue to go through the preseason, they will be without Tshiebwe for a small period of time. Calipari announced via Twitter that Tshiebwe will be having a “minor” knee procedure to “clean some things up.”

“Bad news is I kept him out of practice Sat. with knee stuff,” Calipari said. “He refused to sit out Pro Day and balled out. I made him sit out Mon. and get examined as a precaution. He’s going to have a minor 15-minute procedure to clean some things up. Not a big deal, but no dancing at Madness!”

Tshiebwe averaged well over a double-double last season, going for 17.4 points and 15.2 rebounds per game. He even recorded a 20-20 game against Mississippi State during SEC play, totaling 21 points and 22 rebounds.

Kentucky will begin its season on Nov. 7 vs. Howard before facing Michigan State in the Champions Classic a week later. Calipari does not seem too concerned that Tshiebwe will be missing any time, even with a knee procedure.

John Calipari provides good news on Oscar Tshiebwe

Calipari would not just come forward with bad news. He did give a positive update when it comes to Tshiebwe’s potential professional career going forward, saying his performance at Pro Day was “unbelievable.” Tshiebwe came back for a reason according to Calipari and it’s already beginning to show.

“Good news is Oscar had an unbelievable performance at Pro Day and the scouts loved what they saw,” Calipari said. “He came back to develop his game and become a more complete player and that’s exactly what he displayed Sunday night. They loved it.”
