Report: Peny Boone won't transfer to Kentucky due to academic requirements

After re-entering the portal again in the spring, it appeared that Kentucky would be the pick for Peny Boone. However, according to the latest on the matter, that will no longer be the case for the transfer back.

Per Nick Roush of Kentucky Sports Radio, Boone will not be transferring to Kentucky after all. While it’d be his second school to pick this offseason, the issue reportedly stems from an academic matter involving credits that will keep him from eligibility at the university.

“KSR has learned that Boone will not be transferring to Kentucky,” wrote Roush on Sunday. “Players now have the green light to transfer as many times as possible without losing any eligibility, however, they still must meet certain academic requirements to become eligible at their next school.”

This is a scenario that can certainly take place after a certain amount of transfers. When you consider academics, admittance into a new university isn’t as simple after several moves. This case specifically involves three, including two just in the past four months.

Boone started his career at Maryland where he spent two years before transferring to Toledo for his past two. This last season with the Rockets was by far the best of his career with 1,400 rushing yards, good for eighth best in the nation, and 15 scores off of 194 carries. That won him MAC Offensive Player of the Year.

After the season, Boone entered the transfer portal for the second time of his career. After being available for a week, he decided to give his commitment to Louisville. That didn’t last, though, as he re-entered the portal again three months later in the spring window.

Kentucky was involved in Boone’s portal recruitment in the first go around before he ended up choosing their in-state rival. It’s clearly, even after adding Ohio State RB Chip Trayanum, a position of interest for them based on their transfer targets, including RB Damien Martinez, the No. 14 overall player and No. 2 RB per On3’s 2024 Transfer Portal Top Players, before his commitment to Miami. It was also trending their way this time with On3’s Steve Wiltfong and Pete Nakos both predicting him to land in Lexington after his visit there. That would mean him picking them over his other option in Georgia.

Still, with this bump, that looks like it’ll no longer be the case. That leaves Boone to find another school to chose from the portal. As for Kentucky, they’ll have to look elsewhere if they still want to add another rusher to their backfield.
