Kentucky freshman Zvonimir Ivisic reveals reaction to being deemed eligible
Getting Kentucky freshman Zvonimir Ivisic eligible was a battle. Head coach John Calipari fought so hard to get him on the court, with everyone coming to fruition on Saturday afternoon against Georgia. It was a dazzling debut for Ivisic as he stole the show in a comfortable win at Rupp Arena.
The news of Ivisic gaining eligibility came earlier in the day, with there being a quick turnaround before tip-off in Lexington. He revealed the emotions of finding out he could play, sharing a moment with Calipari in his office. Both of them cried — hopefully tears of joy — before they wound up jumping around in excitement.
“We cried,” Ivisic said during a postgame interview with SEC Network. “We both cried. And then we started jumping in his office.”
Calapri and Ivisic had to quickly move on from their emotions, getting ready for the game. Kentucky needed a win to keep pace in the SEC, hoping to win a regular-season championship. While they were certainly favored to take down Georgia at home, Ivisic was going to be getting his first college basketball experience.
It could have not gone any better. Ivisic began the game by making all of his first four shot attempts, having 11 points in the first half. He added some positive play on the defensive end and even showed off his ability as a passer.
Ivisic did almost everything, having quite an impressive debut. In just 16 minutes played, Ivisic recorded 13 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals, and three blocks.

However, he did admit there were some nerves after checking into the game. Especially when his first shot went up. But once the ball went through the hoop, more emotions began to flow through Ivisic and he just continued to go out there, playing basketball.
“To be honest, I was nervous,” Ivisic said. “I was really nervous. When it went in, I was happy. I don’t know, I was excited. It was fun. I enjoyed it.”
Hopefully, by the time Kentucky takes the court again, the nerves will be completely gone for Ivisic. Having an extended run under him should help out, with the Wildcats heading on the road to face South Carolina on Tuesday.
Ivisic is bound to once again be a huge story, especially if he can continue to put up incredible numbers. Potentially a huge (literally) addition to the rotation for Kentucky and Calipari.
