Louisville had their best season since joining the ACC in 2023 in what was their first year under Jeff Brohm. Now, in year two, the Cardinals could be up for several more wins in 2024, even if Greg McElroy sees a few losses going in.

McElroy assessed the Cardinals’ schedule during a recent episode of ‘Always College Football’. He has them starting well against two non-conference opponents. That’s before their first conference game which, based on last year and what he thinks of them this year, could be more difficult than some think.

“You look at how things start for them – Austin Peay, Jacksonville State. Should handle both those games out of the gate. Then they get Georgia Techtricky game,” said McElroy. “You know what I’ve already said about Georgia Tech. I think they’re really talented, they’ve got a lot of team speed. They’re not a team you want to mess around with but that game will be in Louisville so I would lean in favor of the Cardinals. Remember, Georgia Tech played them in the opener last year and that game was really interesting, at least for the first half and then Louisville came all the way back and somehow pulled off a miraculous comeback.”

From there, McElroy went through the final three quarters of the schedule. That includes all of their remaining league matchups as well as The Governor’s Cup. Those nine featured three more games that he thinks could possibly cause problems for the Cards.

“They got to Notre Dame on September 28th. You know Notre Dame has had that one circled – that’s for sure. SMU comes to them, at Virginia. Miami is at home – very difficult game there,” McElroy said. “They’re at Boston College, they’re at Clemson on November 2nd. They’re at Stanford on November 16th before they finish up with Pitt at home and at Kentucky.”

For those counting, that’s four games in total that McElroy highlighted as potential losses for Louisville. The list includes a rematch with the Fighting Irish from last year, two conference games against the Hurricanes and versus the Tigers, and their rivalry against the Wildcats in Lexington this season.

“You look at the losable games on the schedule? The Notre Dame game is definitely a losable game. Miami game at home – very losable game. At Clemson – very losable game. At Kentucky – very losable game,” listed McElroy. “So there are about four games that are legitimately losable, I think, for Louisville, at least looking at their preseason schedule.”

This thought wouldn’t suggest another double-digit win finish for the Cardinals after just going 10-4. That’s not their concern, though, as they look to reach at least 10 wins in consecutive seasons for the first time in a decade since their days in the American and Big East.
