Jeff Brohm addresses Louisville's issues with containing running quarterbacks
The Louisville Cardinals are now coming off two-straight losses and head coach Jeff Brohm is looking for answers. One of those answers that’s going to be vital to find is a way to stop the opposing quarterbacks from running the ball.
Brohm recently addressed the team’s issues with containing running quarterbacks, explaining what some of the issues have been this season and emphasizing the need to execute better moving forward.
“Unfortunately, we’ve had a couple of calls where we’re in Blitz-0 and the running quarterback has gotten out that went a long ways,” Jeff Brohm said. “With that said, everyone playing the exact call is first.”
In five games this season, Louisville has allowed quarterbacks to run for 324 yards on their defense. That’s an average of 64.8 yards per game from the quarterback position. For a defense that’s giving up just 113.8 yards per game on the ground, it’s having a massive impact on the team. That’s especially true when you consider sack yardage is taken off a quarterback’s rushing total, meaning that the 324 yards given up to quarterbacks include 63 yards taken off from sacks.

Both Tyler Huff of Jacksonville State and Kevin Jennings of SMU ran for better than 100 yards on Louisville’s defense with a touchdown. Jennings’ 113 yards was the most this season for a quarterback playing the Cardinals. Haynes King and Riley Leonard of Georgia Tech and Notre Dame ran for 58 and 52 yards respectively. They both also scored touchdowns.
“Secondly, being a little more conscious of not being too aggressive in those situations to allow a five-yard run turn into 50,” Brohm said. “We’ve had a couple of times in our Blitz-0s where two guys have taken some part of the blitz instead of doing their responsibility, which means if we can’t execute as well, we need to pull back on it. So, there’s just numerous things that we can do to help that, but yes, the quarterback running for yards, those yards are unacceptable and we need to be better at that.”
Louisville and Jeff Brohm need to find a solution for running quarterbacks quickly. The next three games all feature running quarterbacks. This week, it’s Anthony Colandrea and Virginia, with his 158 rushing yards on the season. Then, it’ll be Heisman hopefully Cam Ward and Miami. From there, Louisville wraps up October with Boston College and Thomas Castellanos who has rushed for 113 yards this season after rushing for 1,113 yards in 2023.
