Tyler Shough elected to transfer to his third team for his final collegiate season as a graduate student. It’s another new start for him and one that has led to plenty of interest within the program at Louisville.

Jeff Brohm spoke about Shough during a press conference on Monday. In doing so, he listed off all the aspect of him that make him a great fit for the Cardinals and why they’re so glad to have him as their quarterback.

“We’re excited about Tyler,” Brohm stated. “I think he competed in the spring and did a good job. He showcased his arm strength. He has learned our offense – he has it down, he studies, he’s a student of the game.”

“(Shough) is a veteran. He has played a lot of football,” said Brohm. “He has had some ups and downs, which is good that he has been seasoned.”

One negative factor about him like other players, though, is an injury history that has held him to no more than seven games in any of his six seasons. Still, as Brohm noted, Louisville won’t be putting him into as much danger as his arm interests them more than his legs.

“Obviously, he has had a few injuries through his career. But, you know, he was asked to run the ball quite a bit in the past,” Brohm explained. “While we’ll have that package available? At the same time, we want to make sure that, you know, we protect him, he can throw it, we get the ball in our playmakers’ hands, and we don’t have to run him as much.”

Shough has appeared in 30 games with Oregon and Texas Tech since 2018. In that time, he has thrown for 4,625 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions on 63.2% completion. He also rushed for an additional 714 yards and 10 more scores.

After his third season with the Red Raiders in Lubbock, Shough transferred again this offseason. From there, he picked Louisville out of the portal at No. 353 overall and as the No. 31 QB per On3’s 2024 Transfer Portal Top Players.

Shough has generated some optimism already with how he’s looking ahead of his seventh and final year. Brohm is ready for it too as he expects him to have a major impact as a Cardinal.

“I think, even now, we can spend some time with him and we have,” said Brohm. “I feel good about where he’s at and I think he can play at a high level.”

“We feel confident about his leadership skills, what he brings to the table, and we think he can have a big year.”
