Kentucky-Louisville rivalry game postponed due to COVID-19 concerns
Wednesday’s college basketball rivalry game between Kentucky and Louisville has been postponed due to COVID-19 concerns within Louisville’s program.
“The Kentucky men’s basketball team’s game vs. Louisville scheduled for Wednesday in Rupp Arena has been postponed due to positive COVID-19 results within the UofL program,” Kentucky said in a release.
“UK Athletics is working to find a replacement game for either Wednesday or Thursday in Rupp Arena. Officials from Kentucky and Louisville will monitor opportunities in which the teams can reschedule the annual rivalry game.”
Louisville has paused all activities, resulting in the postponement of Wednesday’s game against Kentucky.
“The University of Louisville men’s basketball team has paused all team-related activities indefinitely due to multiple positive COVID-19 tests among individuals within the program, UofL Interim Director of Athletics Josh Heird announced on Monday,” Louisville said.

With Kentucky game postponed, Louisville joins long list of programs on pause
COVID-19 has again started wreaking havoc on the sports world, and college basketball is no different. As of 6:26 p.m. ET on Sunday, Dec. 19, Stadium’s Jeff Goodman reported that there are 32 programs currently on pause across the nation. Now, Louisville joins that long list.
At this point in the season, Louisville has a 7-4 record. The Cardinals began the year 5-1 following a four game winning streak, including a win over Maryland. Louisville has also picked up wins over NC State and Mississippi State this season. Wednesday’s annual rivalry game against Kentucky would have been Louisville’s toughest test of the season yet.
Kentucky, meanwhile, is 8-2 on the year. The Wildcats opened the season with a 79-71 loss to Duke. Kentucky followed that up with seven straight wins before falling to Notre Dame last week. But Kentucky bounced back with a dominating win over UNC in the CBS Sports Classic, which was also impacted due to COVID-19 after UCLA and Ohio State were forced to pull out.
