New Louisville head men’s basketball coach Kenny Payne has received some big news, as forward Sydney Curry has announced that he’s returning to play for the Cardinals in 2022-23. A 6-foot-8 big-man, Curry was a junior for Louisville last season under former head coach Chris Mack.

Curry, who transferred to Louisville from John A. Logan College at the JUCO level, averaged 7.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per game for the Cardinals in 2021-22. He played in 28 games for Louisville while making 12 starts – with his best outing coming against Wake Forest on Feb. 26 as he put up 28 points with seven rebounds in a loss.

During his time at John A. Logan, Curry averaged 12.9 points and 8.2 rebounds per game while shooting 69.4% from the field in 2020-21. He helped lead the team to an 18-5 record and conference championship that same season.

Curry is the first Louisville player to publicly announce a return to the Cardinals’ program for the 2022-23 season. The school made the decision to part ways with Chris Mack back on Jan. 26 and later hired Kenny Payne – who played at Louisville from 1985-1989 – on March 16.

The junior forward was a McDonald’s All-American coming out of high school and unfortunately his career at Louisville did not go quite as planned. As a sophomore, he averaged 9.6 points per game and 8.1 rebounds per game.

Williamson is a native of Rockwall, Texas, and coming out of high school he chose Louisville over Kansas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Oklahoma.
