First reported by Jody Demling, the Louisville Cardinals have hired Chip Long as an offensive analyst.

Chip Long is a longtime FBS offensive coordinator, who most recently was on Geoff Collins’ staff at Georgia Tech. However, he had most of his success as a coordinator while at Notre Dame under Brian Kelly from 2017-19. It was with the Irish that Long proved himself, helping to bounce back from the team’s 4-8 campaign in 2016.

He would later be replaced at Notre Dame by Tommy Rees, who has since left to become the offensive coordinator at Alabama.

Along with Georgia Tech and Notre Dame, Long has been the offensive coordinator at Memphis and Tulane.

Chip Long only spent one season with Georgia Tech, where he was tasked with reviving the offense as it struggled under Collins to transition away from the triple option. However, the offense struggled once again, only scoring 17.2 points per game, which was 125th in the nation. Long was not retained by the new staff.

Louisville has an entirely new coaching staff as Jeff Brohm is replacing Scott Satterfield as head coach. The Cardinals brought in Brian Brohm to be the team’s next offensive coordinator. He was previously the coordinator at Purdue. Now Long is on to assist him.

Greg McElroy gave Jeff Brohm a high grade for his hire

After Louisville hired Jeff Brohm, Greg McElroy gave the hire an ‘A’ grade. He loved Brohm because he is a native son with success as a head coach.

“You bring back one of your own, Jeff Brohm. What more could you say about Jeff Brohm’s tenure at Purdue? He stepped into a situation at Purdue that everyone said, ‘Man, I don’t know if he can win there.’ Not only did he win, but he did a great job there. Got to a Big Ten championship game. Won nine games. Did a lot for the program. And did so with solid quarterback play, a superstar at wide receiver pretty regularly and a defense that just played their tails off,” McElroy said.

“And now Jeff Brohm, you talk about a fun offense to play in. A guy that’s going to incorporate ways of featuring his players, like he did at Purdue. And he’s going to be able to draw up all these cool, crazy screens and all these different eye violations and things that are going to cause opposing defenses to — make their heads spin, essentially. I think Jeff Brohm gets an ‘A.’ He has familiarity, obviously, with the school. His familiarity with the players and the bona fides he’s already created at Purdue leads me to believe that this is a home run hire.”
