Trey’Dez Green was a name LSU football fans got familiar with this season. The former five-star prospect made an impact for Brian Kelly, going for 101 yards and four touchdowns on 13 receptions. Now, Matt McMahon is enjoying Green’s talents on Saturday.

For the first time this season, Green checked into a basketball game for LSU. A road game against No. 4 Alabama is a pretty big spot but plays are already being made. Green has used his size early for the Tigers and found some production.

When Alabama’s Chris Youngblood went up for a three, Green was there with a block. Quickly gathering the ball to the other end, a nice dunk was thrown down by the freshman. At the time, the LSU lead was cut to one but the game is now tied at 40 as the teams head into the halftime locker room.

To this point, the dunk is Green’s only two points of the night. He has also recorded the block, snagged two rebounds, and committed a foul. More action is surely coming his way in the second half from McMahon as LSU is looking to pull off a huge upset in Tuscaloosa.

“Trey’Dez has started practice,” McMahon said back in January, just after LSU’s bowl win against Baylor. “There’s an acclimation process. He started with individual workouts, he’s done very well there. He’s now starting to work his way into 5-on-5 live practice and has been really good here his first week with the team.”

Green played high school football and basketball at Jackson (LA) Zachary, where he was a five-star prospect. He was the No. 31 overall recruit in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Football programs all over the country were giving Green scholarship opportunities. After all, it’s easy to see why somebody at 6-7, 230 pounds with Green’s athleticism is coveted on the football field. But Division I schools were coming after him as a basketball player too.

LSU offered Green in basketball on Sept. 23, 2021. Just under a month later, Ed Orgeron extended a football scholarship. Texas A&M was the only other power conference program to show interest in Green in basketball but plenty of mid-majors expressed interest.
