Alexis Morris calls out 2022-2023 LSU team for being scared vs. South Carolina, takes shot at leadership on current team
After South Carolina defeated LSU in the SEC Tournament Championship on Sunday, former LSU standout Alexis Morris went on a tirade on social media. The former First Team All-SEC member started by weighing in on LSU’s 88-64 loss to South Carolina in the 2022-23 season.
“You see what I did to South Carolina last year by myself. I didn’t have my team. My team wasn’t ready. I can say it now,” Morris said. “I played against South Carolina last year by myself. My team was scared.”
In Morris’ final season at LSU, the Tigers fell in blowout 88-64 fashion to South Carolina. In the loss, Morris tallied a team-high 23 points and six rebounds while shooting 11-29 from the field. For reference, Morris averaged 15.4 points per game in the 2022-23 campaign.
LSU didn’t meet South Carolina again last season. The Tigers suffered an upset to Tennessee in the SEC Tournament and South Carolina fell to Iowa in the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament. Morris walked away with a national title, but no win against the Gamecocks.
Evidently, the shortcoming still bothers her. While Morris wasn’t around to help, LSU has faced South Carolina twice this season. Both times, LSU has left with a loss. On Sunday, the Tigers didn’t go down without a fight, literally.
Alexis Morris claims LSU lacks leadership
With just over two minutes left in the fourth quarter, a nasty scuffle broke out, resulting in multiple ejections and LSU star Flau’Jae Johnson’s brother being escorted off the court in handcuffs. Morris claims the Tigers lack the leadership needed to avoid such situations.

“Either way it goes, that would not have happened [if I was there]. You gotta have a leader on the court,” Morris said. “We don’t have a leader on the court to be like, ‘Hey, we not about to engage. We not about to initiate. We’re not about to start no type of confrontation.'”
LSU’s leader and head coach Kim Mulkey certainly didn’t de-escalate the conflict after the game. After the game, Mulkey fueled the flames, calling out Cardoso.
“Do you realize there was only one foul called on each team with two minutes left in the fourth quarter?” she said. “Are you kidding me? That might have created some of that. Not the way we play. We’re going to foul your ass. They’re going to foul your ass. You only blew the whistle one time? Think about that now.
“I wish [Cardoso] would have pushed Angel Reese,” Mulkey said. “When you’re (6-7), don’t push somebody that little. That was uncalled for in my opinion. Let those two girls that were jawing, let them go at it.”
