The LSU Tigers are national champions after winning the 2023 Women’s NCAA Tournament, and star Angel Reese and coach Kim Mulkey got to help down the nets. The Tigers finished the job with an incredible performance against Iowa in the final game of the season — scoring 102 points to win 102-85 and take home the title.

After winning it all, Mulkey and Reese got to celebrate one of the greatest traditions in sports — cutting down the nets after winning the tournament.

The Tigers jumped out all over the Hawkeyes with an incredible shooting performance, building a 15-point lead by the end of the first half. The Hawkeyes began to cut into the deficit in the third quarter, and even brought it back to single digits before LSU sealed the game in the fourth quarter. LSU held their lead throughout the game to secure the 102-85 victory and win the first women’s national title in school history.

For Mulkey, the championship was the fourth time cutting down the nets in her career as a coach — although it was her first with the Tigers. Mulkey won three titles with the Baylor Bears before heading to Baton Rouge to take over a nine-win program. In just her second year at the helm, she delivered a national title to the Tigers.

LSU saw five players score in double figures, including a 22-point effort from Jasmine Carson off the bench. Forward Angel Reese set a women’s Division 1 record with her 34th double-double of the season to finish with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The 102 points scored by the Tigers were the most ever in a championship game. They finished the game with incredibly efficient shooting numbers of 37-of-69 (53.6%) from the field and 10-of-16 (62.5%) from 3-point range.

LSU overcame a big performance from Iowa guard Caitlin Clark, who set an NCAA Tournament record for both points scored and 3-pointers made across the entire tournament in Sunday’s game and LSU even sent Clark home with a going-away present courtesy of Angel Reese and an end-of-game taunt despite the Hawkeye scorer’s big night. Clark finished 30 points and eight assists on 8-of-19 shooting from deep, but it wasn’t enough to get past a balanced scoring attack from the Tigers. She was held scoreless from the 3:54 mark of the third quarter until 5:21 remaining as she dealt with foul trouble.
