Booger McFarland reveals his message to every LSU head coach: 'I'm loyal to the three letters, not to you'
Booger McFarland always has the best interest of LSU at heart when it comes to its head football coach. That’s why he treats all of them the same way.
Although the former Tigers defensive lineman turned ESPN analyst is there to offer advice, he’s also honest when things aren’t going well. Speaking on the Andy & Ari podcast, McFarland relayed the message that he gives to all coaches who don the purple and gold.
“Every coach that comes to LSU, I tell them all the same thing: ‘I’m loyal to the three letters, not to you,'” he said. “So you’re always going to get honest from me because I am loyal to my program because I want to see those kids win and I want to see LSU be successful. So when I text any of them going all the way back to Les Miles and even now to (Brian Kelly), I text them from a football analyst standpoint of what I see and it’s the pure, honest truth.
“Sometimes it’s, ‘I love how you did XYZ’ or something it’s ‘You know what? This was poor.’ What you did, how we played, what we’re doing is not good enough. So I think as a coach, you can respect it, or at least I hope he does. BK and I’ve got a good relationship. I think he’s openly said he came to LSU for a opportunity to win a championship. So what I’m saying and what I text him, there’s no secret. What’s already known doesn’t need to be said.”
LSU is preparing to enter its fourth season under coach Brian Kelly and has still yet to make the College Football Playoff. The Tigers have finished with at least nine wins every year so far, but the expectations at a program like LSU are much greater.

Heading into next season, Booger McFarland said he has been honest with Kelly that he’s going to have to get a lot further than he has in the past to convince LSU faithful that he’s worth keeping around.
The Tigers have shown that they are not afraid to let go of a coach no matter his past success. That much was made clear when they fired Ed Oregeron in 2021, only two years removed from leading the team to a national championship.
Kelly is signed through the 2031 and still has plenty of time to prove himself, but his seat is certainly getting warmer as time goes on.
