Brian Kelly knows there are bigger expectations for LSU in 2023 and the hype will be real with Florida State as the opener.

Like last season, the Tigers get the Seminoles right off the bat, but it was a rocky start for Kelly and company. Florida State got the better of LSU in the end, but the Tigers ran from that game and ended up in the SEC Championship Game.

Kelly won’t let the opener define the Tigers, but there’s no doubt the stakes are high.

“I think we all know that Florida State is going to present a great challenge for us,” Kelly said. “We’re going to present a great challenge for them. It’s a great college football game to come out, but our season’s not going to be defined on one win or one loss. We got a long way to go after that. But it’s a great opener. It’s great for college football, and it’ll be a great test for us coming out of the gates.

“I don’t think we win or lose our season in game one. But it’ll be a great way for us to really skyrocket if we come out of that with a great victory against probably, it’s gonna be a top 10 team.”

LSU-Florida State is a neutral site game again. This time, the two squads face off at Camping World Stadium in Orlando (Fla.).

It’s a big challenge before LSU gets Grambling State and then opens conference play against Mississippi State over the following two weeks.

Kelly also talked about the development that he wants to focus on heading into next season. He says it’s something that he feels he has found success in during his career and that he hopes to provide all the knowledge that he can to his players.

“It’s what I believe I’m good at. And I don’t say that in any kind of egotistical way. But that’s what I’ve been doing for 32 years. And I love doing it, I think I’m good at it. When you’re good at something, you really invest your time in it,” Kelly said. “And so I love investing my time in the players because I can bring so much experience to that.

“Whether it’s sleep or nutrition. Or how we can help them during a practice and being the best they can be during the week. And flipping that switch to Saturdays and being the best competitor.”
