Brian Kelly addresses Myles Brennan, quarterback situation

New LSU head coach Brian Kelly has seen plenty of attention in his first month in Bayou country, making headlines for his dance moves and accent while the Tigers attempt to figure out the quarterback situation. While a converted wide receiver takes snaps to end the 2021 season, 2022 promises to offer more options on offense.

During LSU’s Texas Bowl game against Kansas State, Brian Kelly talked about the quarterback situation moving forward, reassuring Myles Brennan of his spot in the upcoming competition.

“Absolutely [Myles Brennan] will have an opportunity to earn the starting job,” said Kelly. “All three of them will get an opportunity and obviously, we’ve got Garrett Nussmeier will have the opportunity as well. We already talked about Walker (Howard) and those three guys are the centerpiece of the quarterback position.

Brennan is the veteran of the group, pulling his name out of the transfer portal last month after weighing his options in his final year. He is also the returning starter of sorts, winning the 2020 and 2021 jobs before injuries set him back twice.

Freshman Garrett Nussmeier, who preserved his redshirt after a midseason discussion, will stand beside incoming freshman four-star Walker Howard.

“They’ll all have an opportunity to compete,” Kelly repeated. “Certainly, we love having a veteran in Myles in there. Who’s been out there that provides you a very similar situation that I had at Notre Dame. This past year and we can go to work going forward right into the spring.”

Kelly’s final Notre Dame teams relied on veteran quarterbacks Ian Book and Jack Coan, but the former also started four seasons with the Fighting Irish. As spring rolls around, the competition will remain wide open as some fans breathe a sigh of relief to have even one quarterback back available.

It has already been established that Brian Kelly should stick to coaching football and not establishing accents.

After making some remarks to the crowd at a LSU basketball game on Dec. 1 and using the word “family” with a forced Louisiana twang, the new Tigers head coach is continuing to talk about accents. During the Texas Bowl, he laughed about it before going onto say that he is from Boston and does not have a strong accent.

“Whether it was dancing or I couldn’t get my accent down with ‘family’ … Listen, I’m from Boston. We don’t have strong accents,” Kelly said about the night he was introduced to the LSU crowd at the basketball game. “You can’t get onto me about my accent.”
