Brian Kelly discusses debut of Logan Diggs in backfield, running back depth
After limping through the season opener with a depleted stable of running backs, LSU got a little closer to full strength on Saturday against Grambling thanks to the return of Logan Diggs in the backfield.
The Notre Dame transfer made his LSU debut and did not disappoint, going for 115 yards and a touchdown.
“We knew what we were getting with Logan,” coach Brian Kelly said. “He played for me at Notre Dame and I knew what we were going to get from him. It was just a matter of getting him healthy. We weren’t going to play him unless he felt really good. He felt good and he had a good week of practice.”
In addition to his rushing total, which came on just 15 carries, Diggs also contributed a catch for 18 yards. He’s got the ability to be a staple in the LSU backfield.
While at Notre Dame, Diggs racked up 1,050 yards and seven touchdowns across two seasons. He also added 267 yards receiving and three touchdowns.

Kelly’s obviously familiar with his work.
“You’ve got to prepare the right way. He prepared the right way,” Kelly said. “He was ready to play and I think we saw the kind of back that is going to help us.”
His play is a welcome relief for LSU, which has been down several running backs to start the season.
In addition to Logan Diggs not playing in the season opener against Florida State, LSU was also missing Armoni Goodwin (injury) and John Emery (two-game absence).
Emery will return this week against Mississippi State.
Couple that with another emerging presence in the backfield, and LSU should have a solid group it can work with going forward.
“I thought Kaleb (Jackson) brought a toughness and physicality to our running game, as well,” Kelly said. “We get John Emery back next week. We think we’ve added to that position where we should have a real effective running game.”
Jackson ran 11 times for 62 yards and two touchdowns against Grambling.
