Brian Kelly explains what excites him about beginning his first year at LSU
Brian Kelly and the new coaching regime are preparing to embark on their first year leading the LSU Tigers, and the former Notre Dame front man recently expressed his excitement about the challenge ahead.
“I think for me, the process is about really building the right traits for the group,” Kelly said.
“As we get an opportunity to be around them more and more, whether that is actually when you put the helmets on, or whether you’re having dinner with them or meeting with the leadership group, or you’re in the weight room with them, to me, that’s one in the same.”
While Brian Kelly understands the small football details are important as he builds his new squad, he believes each day leading up to spring football is just as valuable as the coming practices themselves.
“Yeah, there’s talent, there’s route running and all of those things that are football related that are important as well, but each one of these days is an important day. Building those habits and traits that are so necessary to be a championship football team, I’m excited as every day kind of goes by just as I would be just waiting for spring practice.”

To accomplish that will depend heavily on the revamped staff’s new scheme, including defensively, with Kelly introducing new defensive coordinator Matt House during a Wednesday press conference in Baton Rouge.
“I think offensive minded coaches will tell you if you line up one way, you’re going to have a long day,” Kelly said. “And so, we are going to defensively, be able to give you multiple looks. Obviously, try to keep the personnel as constant as possible and make it difficult for offenses to know what they are going to get from down to down.”
Brian Kelly believes his defensive philosophy aligns with how football is coached and schemed at the college level in the modern era.
“That’s really the game today, right,?” Kelly added.
If you are constantly moving personnel in and out of the game in multiple packages, it makes it a little bit more of a game for the offense because they can change tempo on you. So, we are going to try to have the pen last in a lot of those situations.”
