When Brian Kelly took over at LSU, he had to deal with a three-way quarterback competition. That ended with Jayden Daniels, a transfer quarterback who Kelly brought in, winning the job. However, he started the season slowly before picking things up in recent weeks.

Brian Kelly was asked about Jayden Daniels’ progression this season. As he’s improved, Kelly and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock have received a lot of credit, but how much credit does quarterbacks coach Joe Sloan deserve?

“No, I’m not talking about Joe,” Brian Kelly joked. “No way. He wants to run for governor, Joe, so he’s got a career in politics.”

“Joe’s been amazing. He really has. He’s fun to work with. I enjoy being in the room with him. But, he has, obviously, been instrumental in the development of Jayden and the quarterbacks, and has done a terrific job absolutely. Thank you for bringing it up.”

Brian Kelly was in a good mood, joking about not wanting to give his quarterbacks coach credit for the great job he’s done. After all, if he gets too popular for the work he’s doing with Jayden Daniels, Sloan might be asked to take a higher-profile job.

Clearly, though, Brian Kelly is proud of the job his quarterbacks coach has done this season to help Daniels improve to where he is now. He also knows that Sloan deserves more credit than he’s gotten to this point.

Paul Finebaum says Brian Kelly is a hero

ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum said that Brian Kelly is a hero for his decision to go for two in overtime to beat Nick Saban and Alabama.

“He made a mistake against Florida State because I think he was, he had not quite made the transformation to LSU, but he understands those people. One thing about Louisiana, I’ve lived in Louisiana, I’ve covered LSU, I’ve been down there a million times. They’ll forgive you for throwing a punch and missing. That’s the nature of that part of the world. They would’ve loved him anyway. You’re up against Nick Saban, take a shot. You know him out, great. If you end up on your backside, well you gave it your all. We’ll help you up and buy you a beer. He’s a hero,” Paul Finebaum said.

“I don’t want to say, well I will say, that will take them a long way through stormy weather in Baton Rouge, because he did something that will forever be remembered, and he did it against the one guy he had to do it against.”
