Brian Kelly has a decision to make at quarterback for LSU this season. The competition between Jayden Daniels and Myles Brennan is ongoing, and Kelly revealed the plan for reps ahead of Saturday’s spring game.

Kelly told reporters reps will be split evenly during the game, which takes place Saturday at 2 p.m. ET. He said given the importance of the position, it makes the most sense to make sure they both get the same amount of attempts in a game-like setting.

“That is a hotly tested position that requires this kind of game so those guys can sort out where they are,” Kelly said, via The Advocate’s Wilson Alexander.

Brennan is the incumbent, coming off a solid senior campaign in 2021. He threw for 1,112 yards on 60.3% passing and 11 touchdowns for the Tigers and opted to come back for one more go-round rather than test the NFL Draft waters.

But he’ll have some tough competition to keep his starting job. Daniels transferred to LSU after three years at Arizona State. Last season for the Sun Devils, Daniels completed 65.4% of his passes for 2,381 yards and 10 touchdowns. He entered the transfer portal in February and announced his commitment to the Tigers the next month.

The quarterback competition is one of the biggest storylines to watch as Kelly takes over after a long tenure at Notre Dame. Saturday’s spring game will give both players a chance to show off their skills in front of fans for the first time.

Jayden Daniels assesses where he needs to improve ahead of fall

LSU had a busy offseason in the transfer portal after first-year head coach Brian Kelly looked to rebuild the roster. Among the most surprising additions, the Tigers added former Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels to the roster to compete for the starting job.

During his first media availability, Jayden Daniels discussed where he needs to improve over the offseason to help him secure the starting quarterback position heading into the fall.

“Footwork,” said Daniels, quickly identifying one area. “Really just building the chemistry with the guys. I came pretty late here, right before spring ball. For me personally, just that leadership role, footwork and going through progressions.

“Things like that, just the things that coach Denmark and them had at Cincinnati. Coach Kelly is an offensive-minded head coach. Just being able to go out there and talk to them about offense, about football, that’s probably one of the best things I could have done.”
