Brian Kelly praises incoming players for adding depth to secondary, offers update on Sevyn Banks
Brian Kelly isn’t the only newcomer for LSU football this offseason. The freshly minted Tigers coach saw a lot of players transfer out after the old coach was ousted. So he had no other choice but to attack the transfer portal himself, certainly in the secondary.
Boy did LSU hit that portal hard in the secondary. Kelly and company added six total defensive backs through the portal, including two from intra-divisional SEC rival Arkansas as well as one, Sevyn Banks, from Ohio State.
How are all these new faces coming along so far in fall camp? Well, Kelly gave a recent update on how the back end of the defense is developing.
“We’re really pleased,” the LSU headman said. “You know, I think it was one where, I think we all didn’t know what to expect. But you know, whether it be younger players, older players, all of them have really shown in camp. I’ll start with, you know, Colby Richardson from McNeese State. Coming in and really showing himself as somebody than can compete for us right away. And then Jalen Davis-Robinson, you know. A true freshman who’s out there competing at a high level.”

Kelly then singled out Banks, giving a update on the cornerback’s recovery.
“Then Sevyn Banks is cleared for seven on seven. And we see what his ability is. You know, we didn’t have Jerrick Bernard-Converse, in the spring. Now, he’s out there. So, an area where we were concerned has now begun to look like one of great depth.”
Lastly, Brian Kelly wrapped up by updating Major Burns‘ status and giving his final thoughts on the position group:
“Major Burns being back brings a guy with a lot of smarts and savvy. So, I just feel, right now, that the concerns that we had there are starting to be alleviated by the production and the play, not by wishing and hoping. I think there was a lot of wishing and hoping coming in. And we’re actually seeing production and consistency out of that group.”
