After capturing the Golden Boot on Saturday against their rival to the north, Arkansas, LSU is a bit banged up. This comes as no surprise, given that we are in the last leg of the 2022 college football season. However, the injuries do Brian Thomas and John Emery could be problematic for the Tigers as they close out the season. On Monday, head coach Brian Kelly provided an update on his two offensive weapons.

“Brian Thomas should be, well I will know this afternoon; he went through his next step this afternoon and the concussion protocol,” said Kelly. “He was in the concussion protocol from practice. He did very well. We’re hopeful that, if everything goes well today, he will be in non-contact (practice) tomorrow. and then, obviously, move into contact on Wednesday.

“The next one was John Emery. He’s fine, just a bruise.”

As Kelly mentioned, Thomas missed the Arkansas game after sustaining a concussion in practice leading up to the matchup. Emery was able to play against the Razorbacks in his usual change-of-pace back role. The senior running back from Saint Rose, LA, finished the game with three rushes for 40 yards. His longest run of the game was a 32-yard scamper midway through the second quarter that helped put LSU in scoring position to take a 6-3 lead.

Up next for LSU will be a matchup with the UAB Dragons on Saturday night. It’ll be the Tigers’ final home game of the season and second to last matchup of the year. This final test before their matchup against Georgia in the SEC championship game will be a trip to Aggieland to take on Texas A&M.

Paul Finebaum: LSU could control its own destiny for the College Football Playoff

LSU has come a long way since its opener. Many were ready to bury the Tigers after their first loss to Florida State and were already denouncing the hiring of Brian Kelly. Now, after their tenth game, Kelly’s team clinched the SEC West with a win at Arkansas and a little bit of help from Alabama down in Oxford. All this has led to a path for LSU that could lead them all the way to the CFP according to Paul Finebaum.

Finebaum saluted LSU during a recap of Week 11 for ESPN. He gave them the credit he didn’t think the national media would for going down to Fayetteville and getting a well-earned victory considering the conditions and the fear of a trap game.

“I know, nationally, LSU won’t get much credit for winning that game…But that was always going to be a difficult and almost impossible win. Forget the conditions that were ridiculously cold around the south yesterday…That was a really big win,” said Finebaum.
