The LSU football team has some potentially serious injuries to monitor heading into Alabama week, with cornerback Zy Alexander and defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo both being held out of practice for now.

Coach Brian Kelly told local reporters they will both “miss some time,” but he didn’t provide much further clarity on their status.

“Neither one is practicing, but we’ll see what it looks like next week,” Kelly said, via Matthew Brune of The Bengal Tiger On3.

Kelly had previously provided a brief update on Alexander, who was injured in the first half of the team’s game against Army. Alexander appeared to suffer an ankle injury following an interception on a Hail Mary just before the end of the first half.

According to the LSU radio broadcast, he was unable to put any weight on the leg.

“Lower-body injury that will get evaluated here over the next 24, 48 hours,” Kelly said. “We’ll get a better picture of that.”

It’s unclear what injury Wingo is dealing with at the moment, but the veteran defensive tackle would be a big loss if he’s out of the lineup for any extended period.

So far this season Wingo has recorded 22 tackles, 3.0 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks. He’s been a consistent and disruptive presence up front on the defensive line.

Alexander has also been a big part of the team’s defense, starting in all eight contests so far. He’s recorded 44 tackles, nine pass breakups and two interceptions and has been one of the biggest ballhawks in the secondary.

Both would be significant pieces in a rivalry game that could well decide the SEC West. Luckily, LSU has a bye week to continue to get Zy Alexander and Mekhi Wingo healthy ahead of the tilt with Alabama.

The Crimson Tide, for their part, are expecting to get the best shot from the Tigers.

“It’s going to take a lot of preparation throughout the week,” Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe said. “It’s going to take us coming together as a whole team, whether the offense, defense, special teams. All of our key elements of the game are going to have to factor into our performance. I think that’s — we have to acknowledge we’re playing a tough opponent. And then, getting together with the coaching staff, trying to grasp as much information from them. It’s going to be a good opponent and the good thing about it, is it’s at the crib. Looking forward to that game.”
