Brian Kelly reacts to fans throwing debris on field: 'If I was in the stands, I wouldn't be happy'
Fans inside Tiger Stadium threw trash onto the field during LSU‘s 42-13 loss to Alabama during Week 11 after Tigers fans didn’t agree with a penalty in the third quarter.
The incident, which began after a facemask call against Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, came as the Crimson Tide continued to extend its lead in the second half. The game appeared to have become out of reach for the Tigers by that point, and it’s no wonder why fans were frustrated with what they were seeing on the field on Saturday. LSU head coach Brian Kelly didn’t blame them for feeling the way they do, either.
“If I were our fans, I wouldn’t be happy,” Kelly said postgame. “I’m not advocating that you throw anything on the field. I think it’s like any venue. I think you should use good judgment, but I wouldn’t be happy if I was watching us play.
“I wasn’t pleased with the way I coached or played either.”
The game was halted for a few moments while stadium employees cleared the playing surface. ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit was on the call for the big-time matchup and voiced his displeasure regarding the actions of LSU’s fans inside Tiger Stadium.

The loss was especially tough for LSU as many considered Week 11’s game against the Crimson Tide to be an elimination game from the College Football Playoff race. Both teams had two losses on their schedule coming in, so the winner would keep their playoff hopes alive while the other would have to settle on a non-CFP postseason berth.
At 6-3, LSU will have to shift its focus away from the College Football Playoff and instead try to finish out the season on a high note.
The Tigers have three games left in the regular season, and if they can win out and secure a win in their bowl game — it will have been the third time in Brian Kelly’s three seasons in Baton Rouge that LSU had won 10 games in a season. That effort begins on Saturday against Florida.
