LSU entered this past week in the midst of a three-game losing streak with little left to fight for in its third season under Brian Kelly. Yet the Tigers showed up Saturday against Vanderbilt to earn a 24-17 victory against a tough Commodores team.

Coming off of a loss to Florida the week before, LSU didn’t cave under the pressure as fans at one pointed chanted for Kelly to be fired during the Vanderbilt game. The coach joined The Paul Finebaum Show on Monday to discuss his victory and defend the team for what it has accomplished under him the past three years.

“I think you’ve gotta look at it from a perspective of ‘Where are we relative to the season?'” Kell said. “We’ve made really good progress and then we have three games where, take the Alabama game out of the mix. If you take the three games that we had a lead going into the fourth quarter, then you know a lot more about yourself. You need to finish and close games. We didn’t finish and close games or we could’ve been 9-1.

“So part of it is having the confidence to know that you can go and win games in the SEC and they certainly can. They’ve won a lot of games. Regardless of the three-game losing streak, they’ve won 11 of their last 15 games. They’ve won 15 out of 16 night games. So this is a team that has repeated winning. So you talk about that during the week and you go back and prepare and they did and they came out and they played with a lot of confidence.”

LSU is now 7-4 on the season after reaching 10 wins in each of the first two seasons under Kelly. He led the Tigers to an SEC Championship appearance in 2022 and won both of his bowl games the past two years.

Brian Kelly holds a 27-11 record since arriving at LSU and a 193-73 record overall as a head coach. He closes out the regular season with a matchup against Oklahoma and then will wait to find out where LSU heads for its bowl game.
