After a 6-1 start and no losses in conference play, things have gotten sideways for LSU in 2024. Two straight losses have brought the Tigers down to earth and in the thicket of the SEC title race.

But head coach Brian Kelly isn’t feeling like his program, or its march toward being a championship-caliber team, has stopped. Slowed or stumbled? Perhaps, but Kelly is confident, still, that his team is heading in the right direction.

“So, did we not win 14 consecutive games at night? I think we won 14 consecutive and we lost our first game. I would say that from that perspective, the odds are that I’m feeling pretty confident that we know what we’re doing. Am I happy about what happened? No. Our players? No. Nobody is,” Kelly said. “Especially when you have an opportunity, as I just mentioned, to get that game into a one-score game and have a chance to come back and win the game. Nobody’s happy about that. But, when it comes to an overall look at the program, we’re, over the last year, we’re 10-3. We won 10 out of our last 13 games. So I’m not in a position to worry about what people are saying about the overall health of the program.”

He continued, and pointed toward LSU’s continued success recruiting — the Tigers currently have the No. 4 class in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 Industry rankings — among other factors indicating there is more, not less, success coming on the horizon and sooner rather than later.

“We have one of the top recruiting classes in the country, those things are only going to continue to get better and a championship program is what we’re going to have here,” Kelly said. “There’s going to be some stumbles along the way, but we’re going to get back up and we’re going to keep building our program towards where it needs to be and that’s a championship program.”
