LSU has a date on the Sunday college football schedule all to themselves with the Florida State Seminoles. It’ll be the first game for the Tigers in the Brian Kelly era. With so much new down in Baton Rouge, there are plenty of questions on how LSU will react come kickoff.

A reporter asked Kelly during his press conference Thursday if there was anything he was unsure about with his team or was still looking for an answer to heading into their Sunday matinee. He said the only thing he wants to see is how his team would respond to what comes with the game.

“This is really going to be about how we manage our emotions. How we handle either being down or being ahead, adversity, things like that,” said Kelly. “This is really about putting a team in a competitive situation and really finding out about how they handle real competition when they haven’t won a lot of games and haven’t done it consistently over a couple of years.”

After going 15-0 in 2019, LSU went 11-12 the last two seasons. That’s quite a drop off for a program that won a national title three seasons ago. Based on that record, Kelly realizes his team hasn’t played in a truly meaningful game in some time. It’s now on him to get them in those situations and see if they react how he hopes.

“They’re going to be put in that kind of situation where they’re gonna have to choose confidence,” said Kelly. “They’re going to have to stay in a real good zone and not have highs and lows. So that will be the real question that you don’t answer until you play the game.”

LSU fans will get their first impression of Brian Kelly this weekend while Kelly gets his first impression of his team. Tiger fans are hoping to see success from their past seasons where they expect postseason accomplishments. Meanwhile, Kelly hopes to see his players step up to the challenge and play consistently, competitively and confidently.
