Brian Kelly sends heartfelt message to Auburn medical team, Auburn-area hospital for Sevyn Banks effort
LSU defensive back Sevyn Banks suffered a scary neck and head injury during the Tigers’ victory over Auburn Saturday night. Banks went to tackle kick returner Ja’Varrius Johnson on the game’s very first play, but lead with his helmet and immediately dropped to the ground following the hit and was taken to the hospital.
Head coach Brian Kelly took a moment Sunday morning to thank the Auburn-area medical teams for their work with Banks following the injury.
“A special thanks to the Auburn medical team, staff at East Alabama Medical Center and Beau Lowery and our trainers and doctors for their work last night,” head coach Kelly tweeted.
LSU tweeted out a mid-game statement following the injury, too. “Sevyn Banks was taken to a local hospital following an injury on the first play of tonight’s game,” the tweet read. “After a series of tests, he was alert and mobile. He has been cleared to leave the hospital and will return to the stadium under the care of team doctors.”

The officials also threw a flag for targeting and confirmed the penalty after a review, resulting in a 15-yard penalty amid boos from the fans in the stands, mostly due to the insensitivity of the situation.
Banks is a transfer from Ohio State and is in his first season with LSU. He played the last four years in Columbus before entering the transfer portal during the offseason. During his time with the Buckeyes, he totaled 43 tackles and 3.0 tackles for loss before taking his talents to Baton Rouge for his redshirt senior season.
The super senior defensive back has only appeared in one game this season, totaling four tackles and 0.5 tackle for loss in LSU’s victory over New Mexico. LSU trailed Auburn 17-14 at halftime after scoring a pair of second-quarter touchdowns to close the gap, but would eventually come back to win the game after a strong second half.
