Brian Kelly takes full responsibility for LSU's disappointing second half vs. Florida State
Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers went into the half against Florida State with a three point lead. However, the second half belonged to Mike Norvell and the Seminoles, with Florida State pulling away to win 45-24.
At one point in the second half, Florida State went on a 31-0 run and Kelly expressed his frustration with that score and how the second half went. At the same time, he did take full responsibility for what happened in the second half.
“Yeah, I’m quite aware of the score and I didn’t like the way we came out,” Brian Kelly said. “I sensed it. I felt it. I’ve got to take accountability and responsibility for the way that we came out in the second half. It’s disappointing.”
Brian Kelly explained that he felt like LSU thought it was something that it wasn’t in the second half, comparing the team’s perception of itself to that of Georgia. The difference is that Georgia is the back-to-back national champion.
“But the buck stops with me, and I’ve got to get our football team to understand and recognize that you’ve got to play this game for four quarters with a mentality,” Kelly said. “And we just did not, for some reason. We thought we were somebody else. We thought we were the two-time national champion Georgia Bulldogs or something. I don’t know what we thought, but we were mistaken.”

Later, Brian Kelly’s quarterback Jayden Daniels would reiterate this point, explaining LSU isn’t the team it thought it was.
“It’s just something we have to prove to him. We have a long season ahead. I agree with him. We’re not the team we thought we were. We thought we were somebody else that we weren’t,” Daniels said. “And, you know, I feel like just as a whole team, we got ahead of ourselves. We thought we were going to come out and it was going to be easy.”
Paul Finebaum says LSU can bounce back
Despite the frustrating loss, LSU is a very talented and well coached team that is capable of bouncing back from this loss. After all, the Tigers bounced back from an opening loss last season too.
“LSU can come back. I’m not concerned,” Finebaum said. “Brian Kelly is a superior, elite coach. [I’m not sure] whether he can completely fix all the problems, but he’s not going to see a team like [FSU] for a while. And I think that’s to his advantage.”
