LSU fans have to be loving how things are going early on in Omaha. Ten runs have been put on the board against Florida, just a few innings away from a national championship. The Tigers have been lethal with their bats, taking advantage of their opportunities.

However, there was a moment when the crowd lost some of its juice. LSU catcher Alex Milazzo went down with an ankle injury, one where he looked to be in a ton of pain. The play happened near home plate as Milazzo scored from first base on a Cade Beloso base hit.

The training staff immediately rushed onto the field to help Milazzo. If there is some positive from the situation, it’s that Milazzo was still able to land on the ankle after the injury occurred. Nonetheless, a scary moment for everyone involved.

Head coach Jay Johnson did not have any hesitation, taking Milazzo out of the game. He was replaced by Hayden Travinski behind the plate. Travinski is possibly playing through an injury of his own but at this point, LSU has nobody else who can play catcher.

There was positive news to come out of the situation as LSU was at the plate in the fifth inning. Milazzo had made his way back to the dugout, looking to support his teammates. He was in a walking boot, though. A good sign to see him back out there.

Alex Milazzo suffers fractured ankle

According to Jacques Doucet of WAFB9 Sports, Milazzo suffered a fractured shin. Thankfully, surgery will not be required moving forward. A tough injury for anyone to take but especially somebody competing for a national championship.

@LSUbaseball Alex Milazzo has a fractured shin, his father Jimmy tells me,” Doucet said. “Jimmy says it won’t require surgery.”

Milazzo has been a frequent in the lineup for LSU while at the College World Series. Monday marked his fifth appearance in Omaha, playing a huge factor. Outside of Sunday’s blowout, the Tigers’ pitching staff has performed at a high level.

Moving forward, Milazzo still has a chance to wear an LSU uniform again. He is just classified as a redshirt junior, with 2023 being his fourth season in Baton Rouge. There is still some eligibility on the cards for the catcher and with a good road to recovery with the shin, he can get behind the plate once again.
