The LSU baseball team advanced in the Baton Rouge Regional, taking down in-state foe Tulane 7-2 behind a strong day by superstar Dylan Crews.

Crews finished 3-of-5 at the plate, driving in a run and helping the Tigers send plenty of players around the bases on the afternoon. But that’s nothing new for the potential No. 1 MLB Draft pick.

“It was a great performance,” Crews said. “I was just going out there swinging strikes, taking balls at the end of the day. Trust in my ability. I worked hard all week.”

The LSU star, who is hitting .425 on the season, has been remarkably consistent this season for the Tigers.

He’s one of the reasons LSU earned the No. 5 national seed, which comes with the right to host the Baton Rouge Regional, as well as a Baton Rouge Super Regional should the Tigers advance to that stage.

How has Crews been so consistent?

“It was sticking to my approach and plan and swinging at strikes, taking balls and worked out for everybody today,” he said.

But the Tigers didn’t necessarily mash like they sometimes do. LSU failed to hit a home run in the game, instead relying on base hits to move runners around.

LSU even played a little small ball in the contest, something that seemed to catch Tulane off-guard at times.

“I think it’s very important, especially with runners on first and second with less than two outs, to get the guy over,” Crews said. “And we’ve been working hard all week with our bunting and our short game.

“So I think Jordan (Thompson) and Gavin (Dugas) laid one down. So we’re able to get the guys over and we scored them. We definitely worked on that for sure.”

As a result, LSU is in the comfortable position of being in the winner’s bracket in the Baton Rouge Regional. Not all regional hosts are able to say that after Day 1.

LSU will return to action on Saturday night at 9 ET with a game against Oregon State. Oregon State knocked off Sam Houston State 18-2 to move into the winner’s bracket.
