As the college football season draws near, the LSU Tigers held their second scrimmage this weekend. Afterwards, head coach Ed Orgeron broke it down, providing stats as well.

Orgeron seemed satisfied following the scrimmage, beginning his press conference encouraged by his team’s play.

“Excellent job by our team and coaching staff of getting the intensity up there,” said Orgeron, per LSU Sports on YouTube. “It was a great day.

“A lot of enthusiasm on both sides of the football.”

Continuing, Orgeron went on to provide stats as well, starting with the offense and his quarterbacks.

“Garrett [Nussmeier] was 18 of 32 for 308 yards, one touchdown, one interception,” read Orgeron. “Max [Johnson] was 11 of 19 for 125 yards, one touchdown.”

Rushing the football, Josh Williams and Armoni Goodwin carried the load throughout the scrimmage. Unfortunately, John Emery and Tyrion Davis-Price didn’t practice, so there was no way to get a better look at the duo.

“Josh Williams had seven rushes, 66 yards. Armoni Goodwin had six rushes for 25 yards. Corey Kiner, five for 15. Those young backs look good.”

As for the wide receivers, Orgeron went out of his way to heap praise on Devonta Lee prior to listing the receiving corps’ stats.

“Devonta Lee, who I’ll say was having a good camp, had five receptions for 85 yards. Malik Nabers four receptions, Deion Smith three receptions. Brian Thomas, Jack Bech, all those guys had pretty good days.”

As you can see, it seems as if the LSU offense was clicking yesterday. Specifically, the performances of Nussmeier and Lee stick out as impressive.

Ed Orgeron gives the defense some love

While the offense put up good numbers, the defense also got some love at Orgeron’s press conference. Moving on, the LSU Tigers head coach ran through some defensive statistics.

“On defense, Jay Ward had eight tackles,” said Orgeron. “Zavier Carter had two sacks, Mason Smith had three sacks. An overall good day.”

Of course, Orgeron had to show some appreciation for his kicker before he wrapped up.

“Our kicker had a 54-yard field goal,” said Orgeron. “Obviously, we think he’s one of the best in the country.”

Afterwards, all three units will be happy to hear their head coach praise them following their second scrimmage.

“We got done what we wanted to get done today.”

If his comments are any indication, Orgeron believes his Tigers are in a good place as the season draws near. To illustrate, the head coach stated that everybody did their job yesterday.

“We got done what we wanted to get done today,” said Orgeron. “The elements were out there today, our team didn’t blink.”

Using the elements to their advantage, the Tigers were able to prepare in a less-than-ideal situation. In the end, it could go a long way towards their success in 2021.

Ed Orgeron and the LSU Tigers open up their season on the road, traveling to play the UCLA Bruins on September 4th.
