A little bit of trash talking is to be expected after a big win, but there is a line that most know not to cross. Unfortunately, South Carolina women’s basketball appeared to go way past it as it celebrated a 66-56 victory against LSU on Friday evening.

The DJ at the game played a song by rapper Camoflauge, who is the father of Tigers star Flau’jae Johnson. This might not seem like a big deal on the surface, but takes on greater significance considering that Camoflauge was murdered by gunfire in 2003 in the family’s hometown of Savannah, Georgia, before Johnson was even born.

The Tigers guard, who is herself a rapper, has often talked about the influence that her father’s music has on her own passion for it. In fact, her name is even inspired by her father’s rap name. Flau’jae Johnson addressed the situation on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday, calling out South Carolina for what she deemed “nasty behavior.”

“I’ll take my L on the chin, but this just nasty behavior,” she wrote. “Nun funny bout that.”

The DJ seemed to double down on the decision to play the song on her own social media accounts. Johnson posted a screenshot from the DJ’s Instagram account where someone else had posted a story from the game with the caption “Playing Camoflauge at the end of the game was crazy.”

The DJ replied to the comment with “My bad” followed by a laughing emoji, seeming to suggest she was making light of the situation. She later issued an apology on social media explaining that she did not mean for playing the song to be taken as disrespect toward Johnson.

“I apologize for playing Cut Friends Instrumental at the game yesterday,” she wrote. “It is never my intent to disrespect anyone or offend anyone when my job is to have fun and make sure other people have a good time. I’m from the Lowcountry/C-Port area so I’ve been playing it for years, even at other games, but I shouldn’t have played it at yesterday’s game.

“I play it on every radio station I’ve ever done from NC, GA, & SC & grew up on Camoflauge so it’s never played with ill intent or as a joke. I can’t control how anyone takes it but I can’t take responsibility & apologize.”

The loss for LSU against South Carolina marked its first all season as Flau’jae Johnson finished with 13 points on just 6-of-18 shooting. So far this season, she is averaging a career-high 19.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists.
