LSU safety Quinton “Pig” Cage will transfer to UTSA next season, he announced Sunday via Twitter. His decision comes after he spent just one season with the Tigers after joining the team from Nicholls State this past offseason.

“BIG APE BACK!!” Cage wrote in his tweet. “Put the hood on my back it ain’t gone rep itself!”

A Louisiana native, Cage was a relatively unheralded recruit coming out of high school in 2020. He signed with Nicholls State of the FCS and then had to wait until the spring to play his first college game because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nicholls State resumed its season in February of 2021, playing seven games and going 4-3. Cage finished that shortened season with 30 tackles (11 for loss), 2.5 sacks a forced fumble and an interceptions. He was named an FCS Freshman All-American for his efforts.

Cage was a walk-on for LSU this past season and made appearances in only two games. He finished the season with seven tackles (three for loss) and a sack, most of which came in the Texas Bowl against Kansas State. The Tigers lost to the Wildcats in that game to end the season with a 6-7 record and brought in coach Brian Kelly to replace Ed Orgeron.

The 5-foot-9, 185-pound Cage is set to join a UTSA team coming off of its best season in school history. The Roadrunners started the season 11-0 before finally losing to North Texas in the regular season finale. They then went on to claim the Conference USA Championship after taking out Western Kentucky in the title game. That earned the team a trip to the Frisco Bowl, where it lost to San Diego State by a score of 38-24.

The Roadrunners will aim to carry the momentum from last year over into coach Jeff Traylor’s third season at the helm. It’s unclear whether Cage will be available for UTSA’s annual spring game, which is set to kick off at 7 p.m. CT Thursday.
