Former LSU star responds to Florida hiring away Corey Raymond
First, Mickey Joseph left LSU for Nebraska. Then, Wednesday night, the Tigers lost another one of their top recruiters.
Cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond is leaving LSU for Florida, sources told On3’s Matt Zenitz. It’s quite a hit to the coaching staff — and former Tigers star and current ESPN analyst Marcus Spears weighed in on Raymond’s departure.
“I am not OK,” Spears tweeted.
Spears played defensive end at LSU from 2001-04. The Dallas Cowboys drafted him in the 2005 NFL Draft and he played in the league until 2013. He’s been at ESPN since 2014.
Losing Raymond isn’t great for Kelly, who’s known for his ability to recruit in the Midwest. Coming on the heels of Joseph’s departure makes it that much bigger of a loss.
Raymond was LSU’s longest-tenured coach, starting his second stint with the Tigers in 2012 as defensive backs and assistant head coach. He served as an intern and assistant strength and conditioning coach at LSU from 2005-07.

Sources: Florida expected to hire key LSU assistant Corey Raymond
The coaching carousel continues to move along — and it appears LSU is losing another key recruiter.
New Florida coach Billy Napier is expected to bring LSU cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond on board as assistant head coach of the defense/cornerbacks coach, sources told On3’s Matt Zenitz.
Raymond has been on staff at LSU since 2012, starting as defensive backs and associate head coach before moving to cornerbacks coach in 2017. He added recruiting coordinator to his title in 2020.
He played at LSU from 1987-91 and went to the NFL as an undrafted free agent. After playing for the New York Giants and Detroit Lions from 1992-97, Raymond went into high school coaching.
LSU brought him on board as an intern in 2006 and moved him to assistant strength and conditioning coach from 2007-08. From there, he went to Utah as cornerbacks coach from 2009-10 and Nebraska as defensive backs coach in 2011.
