The LSU Tigers have one of the more talented quarterback rooms in the country, especially after last year’s backup, Garrett Nussmeier, decided to return to the program during the offseason. Many programs across the country would love to have Nussmeier as their starting quarterback. Still, he returned to LSU, where he is the likely back-up quarterback behind Jayden Daniels.

Nussmeier recently revealed why he returned to the program instead of finding a new home where he could likely start. One of the reasons Nussmeier returned to LSU was his relationship with Tigers quarterback coach Joe Sloan. The Tigers’ veteran signal caller admitted he loves the way he is being coached by Sloan, and took time to explain why.

“Like I told them earlier, one of the first conversations me and Coach Sloan had, he told me that he believed that you know he was the best coach in the country to coach me,” said Nussmeier. “And I think that could be true because we’re very similar. I get very emotional at times, and he’s the same way. So he’s quick to get on to me, but I love it. I’m used to it, and that’s the way I want it to be. I don’t want to be coached to be average. I want to be coached to be the best I can be. So, I have a lot of love for coach Sloan and the way that he coaches me. So it’s been fun.”

Last season, Nussmeier showed that he is a capable starting quarterback. However, there are still a few things that the junior would likely have to polish off in order to be one of the best of the best. And he believes Sloan is just the man who can get him over that hump.

Nussmeier opens up on decision to return to LSU

Nussmeier’s return to Baton Rouge was an easy choice for him despite his position on LSU’s depth chart. Brian Kelly has stated Daniels will continue as the Tigers’ starter but right now, there are more important things to Nussmeier. The state of Louisiana is considered is what he considers home and playing for LSU is an honor.

“I don’t think it was that hard of a decision for me,” Nussmeier said. “This is where I want to be. My roots are in this state, this is my home. It means something to me to represent LSU and represent this state and these fans.

“Also, with my teammates and coaches, I’ve learned to build relationships with the new staff and I have a lot of love for them. And with my teammates, I wanted to finish what we started.”
