Garrett Nussmeier injury: LSU QB leaves Oklahoma game for evaluation
LSU suffered a major loss in the second quarter of their game against the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday night. Tigers’ quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was injured after a Sooners’ defender tackled him, and drove Nussmeier’s shoulder into the ground while tackling him. The LSU quarterback appeared to be in substantial pain while walking off the field, and eventually made his way into the medical tent to be evaluated by medical staff.
Shortly after that, Nussmeier had his pads off and headed with the Tigers’ training staff back to the locker room for further medical evaluation. According to Scott Rabalais, the LSU QB was being evaluated for an X-Ray on his right (throwing) shoulder. That information was relayed via the Tigers radio broadcast on Saturday night. Vanderbilt transfer AJ Swann entered the game for LSU at quarterback while he went to the locker room.
Once he returned from the locker room, multiple media members noticed Nussmeier return to the LSU sidelines with his pads on. And he was warming up in front of the Tigers’ bench. He eventually came back in the game and helped guide LSU to a 37-17 victory over the Sooners. Nussmeier completed 22 of his 31 passes for 277 passing yards, while tossing in three touchdowns with no interceptions.

One of those came after he was injured and came back in the game. It was a beautifully tossed 45-yard touchdown strike to Chris Hilton, Jr. The pass was perfectly placed and one of his best throws on Saturday night. This season, Nussmeier has completed 63.7% of his passes for 3,735 passing yards, while tossing in 26 touchdowns with 11 interceptions.
With the win, LSU improved to 8-4 overall in the 2024 campaign and 5-3 in the SEC. Oklahoma fell to 6-6 overall and 2-6 in the SEC.
