LSU is going to have a different looking staff next season. Wes Johnson is off to Georgia, being hired to be the program’s next head coach. But before heading to Athens, there is one thing he wants to accomplish with the Tigers. A national championship is wanted, with play in Omaha getting underway on Friday.

Gavin Guidry was asked what he has learned from Johnson during his time in Baton Rouge. He said both parties are interested in getting better, helping LSU get wins. Sometimes, the criticism can be tough but “for the most part”, Johnson has given positive reinforcement according to Guidry.

“We’re always into learning,” Guidry said. “We’re always into getting better. He’s always into getting better. He’s always into teaching us and helping develop us. So, maybe if he has to tell us something that we don’t want to hear, he’s going to tell it to us still. But for the most part, he’s always positive.”

Guidry is just a true freshman, working through his first season in college baseball. He has relied on Johnson to help the game translate and thus far, it’s worked in a big way. The majority of results with Guidry on the mound have been positive, especially for a true freshman playing for one of the best teams in the country.

In 31 games pitched, Guidry has pitched 23.2 innings and has just nine earned runs against his name. Just one of those has been over his last six appearances, allowing an Oregon State player to cross the plate during the Baton Rouge Regional.

When Guidry enters his sophomore season, he will potentially be using Johnson’s teachings against him. There has not been a schedule released by the SEC but there is a chance LSU and Georgia meet up on the diamond in 2024. If they do, Guidry would be going up against his former pitching coach.

But until then, they are still focused on working as a team. LSU will kick off their run at a national championship on Saturday night in primetime, facing off against Tennessee. Tigers head coach Jay Johnson will have Guidry available for use if he wants it. Some big moments could occur in Omaha and every team’s bullpen will have to come up clutch at one point or another.

Wes Johnson will be there every step of the way, coaching Guidry until the season is over — win or lose.
